This famous rock garden started as a hobby of Nek Chand, who was an inspector in Chandigarh. Now it is one of the most popular places to visit in the city. What you see here up entirely of sculptures made from waste from cities and factories, presented in a huge outdoor gallery. The place is conveniently located on Uttar Marg in Sector 1, just 1.5 km from Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh. It is easily accessible by any mode of transport.

Your eyes will light up with joy and wonder when you see the mesmerizing installations and decorations divided into three different phases. An amazing mix of pottery, light fixtures, and even broken toilet pots that have been redecorated and made very skillfully.

Passion and hard work have made this wonderful idea possible. It is being built in a 40-acre garden, which is filled with sculptures and artifacts of many colors. There can be no better example of making the best out of waste! This place is amazing as it has around 5,000 statues. Adults have to pay Rs 30 for entry and children Rs 10.

History

This place was built secretly by Nek Chand in 1957 near Sukhna Lake. It was on the road to Darshan of Sukarni State. In his spare time, Nek Chand would collect all the garbage from cities and factories and dump it on the land where crops could not grow. Nek Chand continued to do this work secretly for 18 years, hiding from the authorities. This work was illegal but very profitable.

The authorities then saw it and decided to demolish it, but because it had become so famous, it remained there. Nek Chand was given the right to make further changes to the garden and he was also given staff to make those changes. Today this park is very big and more than 6,000 people from India and other countries visit here every day.

Phase 1

During this, terracotta pots, niches, and rooms with broken bangles, tiles, mirrors, tube light parts, and some toilet items. In Phase 1, different images and figures of people, animals, and birds from the waste and placed in various places.

Phase 2

Phase 2 has a huge waterfall that attracts a lot of people. A small city here, which has an amphitheater, courtyards, and winding paths. Artistic programs are here from time to time.

Phase 3

Phase 3 has beautiful gardens made of carved rocks with statues of camels and elephants that appear larger than in real life.
