For those who would want to spend some time at the beach in between taking a houseboat journey in the backwaters, quiet Marari Beach is conveniently located near Alappuzha (previously Alleppey).
The small Indian town of Kannur, off the usual path, is well-known for its remote beaches, handloom weaving, and enigmatic Theyyam ceremonies involving the possession of spirits in masks.
Kannur is also home to Muzhappilangad Drive-In Beach. Reportedly the longest drive-in beach in Asia, the 2.5-mile stretch is the only beach in Kerala where you can drive (or cycle!) on the sand.
Bekal Beach, located in far North Kerala and about 90 minutes' drive from Karnataka's Mangalore International Airport, is well-known for its historic fort.
