The Amarnath Yatra begins in June and ends in August. It starts in the holy Hindu month of Shravan. The exact dates are decided by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) based on the calendar. The yatra typically lasts for almost 40-45 days.
For 2025, the Yatra might start in the last week of June and end by August. After that, the place gets closed due to heavy snow.

Delhi to Amarnath: Routes 

There are many routes to Amarnath Holy Cave Yatra. It is one of the hard Yatra among the Hindus. The lord Shiva devotees of Amarnath visit this place every year. There are three main kinds of routes that take tourists to this holy place of Amarnath.

1. Jammu - Pahalgam - Amarnath Cave

Jammu to Pahalgam is almost 315 Km. The travellers can reach via taxi and buses. The Government of Jammu & Kashmir also provides the facility of taxis and buses. The visitors can take the same early in the morning. 

The visitors can also come to Jammu by air and start their journey to Pahalgam. Pilgrims can either trek the entire distance or take rides on horseback or helicopters to cover parts of the route.

So, the holy Yatra of Amarnath starts from the first route of Pahalgam located almost 96 Kms away from Srinagar. The important places covered under this route are Chandanwari (16 km away from Pahalgam) and Pissu Top. Visit Sheshnag on the second-day trek of 12 Km from Chandanwari. , then Panchtarni. After that, you will reach the Holy Cave, Shri Amarnath.

2. Jammu - Baltal - Amarnath

This is another route to reach Amarnath from Jammu. The total distance is almost 400 kms. While going this route, travellers can see the natural beauty of valleys and mountains. All these things make the journey more fun-filled.

One can continue the journey on ponies and helicopters.

3. Helicopter Route To Amarnath

The holy Yatra to Amarnath is much liked by tourists. Helicopter services are available from Baltal and Pahalgam to Panchtarni. The distance is almost 6 km from the cave. Travelers can book helicopter rides to save time and energy. Also, if they are unable to trek long distances, they can book the ride.

Major Tips For Amarnath Yatra

1. Improve Your Physical Fitness

Since Amarnath Yatra is a long distance of walking, it is suggested to start doing morning/evening walks of about 4-5 Km every day. Include physical activity at least a month before the actual date of Yatra. 

This way you can make your journey smooth and easy. Also, massage your body daily to stay fit and have flexibility. Start taking a bath in hot water so that your body can become flexible. Also, this way you will not feel tired. This will you can reduce the effect of sudden temperature changes.

Since one has to trek through high mountains like Pahalgam to Chandanwadi, so carry all the important things with you. Chandanwadi to Sheshnag has a walking distance of 5 to 6 hours while Sheshnag to Panchtarni has a walking distance of 6 hours. The next route Panchtarni to Baba Amarnath Cave takes almost 5 hours. 

While passing through these treks, one has to tolerate harsh climates. The climate conditions change very quickly. You can experience sunny weather, rain, and snowfall as well. The temperature might drop to -5 degrees as well. 

So, prepare yourself by taking the essential things before starting the trip.

B. Precaution During Amarnath Yatra

During Shri Amarnath Yatra, you must follow all the guidelines issued by the Yatra Administration. However, the following points are important to remember.

  1. Always keep a slip in your pocket with your Name, Address and the name of the accompanying Yatri
  2. You can hire registered pony wall, porter, etc. available for the best tariffs. If you hire ponies to carry your luggage and eatables, stay in touch with them.
  3. Don’t do fast trekking. Rather move slowly and steadily. Also, maintain discipline and don’t be in a rush.
  4. You must carry enough money for your stay at Pahalgam and to meet other requirements.
  5. All medical facilities are provided free of cost. Still, it is advised to use a personal medical kit.
  6. Perform the Yatra with a peaceful mind. Also, continue chanting “Om Namah Shivay” all the way.
  7. Keep your clothes and eatables in plastic bags. This way they don’t get wet in the rain.

C. Things to Avoid During Amarnath Yatra

For the convenience of the Yatris, it is suggested to follow these rules. Following these guidelines make Yatra smooth and trouble-free.

  1. Don’t stop at such places, which are marked by warning notices.
  2. Alcohol is strictly not allowed.
  3. The Yatra is tough. The travellers must check their medical history before going there.
  4. Don’t overstrain on steep gradients.
  5. Don’t use slippers as the steep rises and falls on the route to the Holy Cave.
  6. Don’t relax at places where warning signs are fixed.
  7. Don’t take shortcuts on the route as it is very harmful.

To start the Amarnath Yatra, register with SASB online. They can also register at the fixed registration centres in various cities, including Delhi. The registration process starts a few months before the yatra commences.
