Akal Takht, also known as Akal Takhat, defines as the throne of the immortal. Akal is defined as the timeless one and Takht means throne. Earlier, Akal Takht was referred as the Akal Bunga. The holy Takht was established in the Golden Temple complex. It is the first and the most important Takhat out of five Takhts in Sikhism.

Guru Hargobind Singh built the Akal Takhat on June 15, 1606. It was founded as a place of justice and temporal issues of Sikhism. The holy place is considered the symbol of a barrier against the Mughals in the 17 and 18th centuries. In the 18th century, various attacks were made by Massa Rangar & Ahmed Shah Abdali on the holy place.

On June 4, 1984, the Indian Army attacked and destroyed the throne of the timeless one to take out Sikh militants in a controversial mission known as Operation Bluestar.

1. Guru Bazaar – The place is located 500 m away from the Akal Takht. This place is famous for the oldest jewellery market in Amritsar. Visitors can get cheap prices for various ornaments and jewellery pieces.
2. Durgiana Temple – Durgiana Temple is 1.5 km away from the Akal Takhat. The temple got its name from the goddess Durga. The sculptures of Hindu gods and hand-written Ramayana are the centre of attraction.
