Where is Old Manali?

Old Manali is 3 km uphill from Manali and is situated more than 6,000 feet above the sea level.

History of Old Manali

According to locals, Old Manali was where Sage Manu came down from the boat which carried birds, animals and plants. This is the same place where he recreated humanity and the animal and bird kingdom after escaping from a huge flood.

  • Hadimba Devi Temple – No visit to Old Manali is complete without visiting Hadimba Devi Temple near this village. This temple is more than 450 years old and is dedicated to the wife of Bhimsena Pandava.
  • Jogini Waterfalls – This water body is just 3 kilometers away from Old Manali. Apart from being a pretty destination, Jogini Waterfalls has a spiritual signicance as this water body is dedicated to a local goddess.
  • Manu Temple – This Hindu temple is the only one dedicated to Sage Manu mentioned above. You will have to go past Manali Community Center to reach this wood and stone structure. Manu Temple Manali apart from having spiritual significance, offers marvelous views of the surrounding hills.
  • Old Manali Market – Buy music CDs and souvenirs and pick locally made garments in Old Manali Market. When you are done with these activities, sip coffee in one of the many cafes and watch the world go by.
  • Vashishth Temple Manali – This 4000-year old temple must be on your Manali tour package. Dedicated to Sage Vashishtha, this temple has a hot sulphur spring nearby where you can rejuvenate yourself.
  • Old Manali Cafes – Your Manali visit would be incomplete without café-hopping in the village. Many such cafes are owned by Israelis and when you step inside them, you will be delighted by what all experiences are on offer
