Sage Vashisht was the spiritual advisor of Lord Rama and he has lent his name to this beautiful village in Himachal Pradesh.
It is said that Sage Vashisht was one of the saptarishis (seven holy rishis), but his fame made Rishi Vishwamitra very jealous. One day, Vishwamitra killed all the sons of Vashisht and this made the latter very depressed.
Wanting to die, the rishi jumped into a river but survived. This river brought him to the present village near Manali which later received the sage’s name; Vashisht. The sage later shrugged off his grief and then meditated in this village.
Since this river had brought the sage out from grief, it was later named Vipasha, meaning ‘one which release people from grief’. Vipasha is now called Beas.
The Vashisht village has a temple dedicated to the rishi and also is situated very close to several hot springs called Vashisht Hot Springs. People come from Manali to bathe in this water body and treat themselves for various skin disorders.
