The initial lake was wiped out by floods in 1888, according to historical records. At this point, Maharana Fateh Singh intervened to save the situation and gave the order to build a dam that is today known as the Connaught Bund or embankment. On the lake's eastern edge, a dam with a length of 800 metres was constructed.

The monarch of the time spent 6 lakh rupees on the refurbishment, which cost money in the medieval age. The dam is still regarded as Udaipur's second-most important source of drinking water. As a result, the lake was given the name Lake Fatehsagar to honour the king Maharana Fateh Singh's kindness.
