Summer holiday abbreviated as “Garmiyo ki Chuttiyan” by the 90s kids will never fail to make you nostalgic about your summer vacations in India. Back then summer vacations were more than mere vacations, it was a sense of freedom, time to visit Nani’s place, visit a hill station and reunite with our beloved cousins. It was a time for kids to execute all the plans which they make a whole year. That was a golden period for us where afternoons were the most active and no sun could stop us from playing. I’m sure, the nostalgia must be hitting you hard. So, we bring you this throwback post that will take you down memory lane.
(a) Nani Ka Ghar
Summer Vacations at that time would be incomplete without visiting Nani ka Ghar. Back in those days when air traveling and international trips were not the norms, we used to pack our bags for Nani's place. That excitement of going to Nani ghar would start hovering around our minds before a week. Those memories of small-town, bigger houses, simpler times and lot of love and fun, total freedom to do whatever the heart desired is what we yearn for today.

(b) Lots and Lots of Mangoes
Summer break without mangoes sounds awkward right? As the calendar turned from April to May boxes of mangoes came in pouring. The most interesting part was going to Nani's mango field and trying our mango-picking skills to get the best one. The whole family would sit to experience delight in every slice. That was the time when the act of relishing the king of fruit, dirtying all the fingers and clothes in the process, was such as fun thing to do.

(c) Ransna, Frooti and Roohafza
How many of you remember the frooti slogan “Mango frooti, fresh and juicy, I think all the 90s kids can relate to this. Rasna, roohafza and frooti were the most in-demand drinks for the kids of that time. This was our own version of cold, refreshing drinks, which our moms used to make every single day and store in the fridge for us to devour when we came home from school or after playing.
(d) Hill Stations
The Summer holiday was always about traveling and family bonding. To escape the immense heat, moving to the hill station was always on the cards. All our cousins along with aunts and uncles would head towards the nearest hill station such as Shimla, Nanital, Mussorie or Manali, Darjeeling, Shillong. Traveling with cousins at that time was so much fun. Those train rides, one to too many suitcases, singing songs, bulky bedding, eating throughout the entire trip, watching the landscape outside the train was something we were always excited about.
(e) Reading books and Comics
Time away from school books would mean reading comics and fiction novels( but for some!). We grew up reading Enid Blyton’s secret seven and the famous five. That was the best time when children were not trapped by smartphones and PlayStations, we used to read our heart desires about Chacha Chaudhary, which was one of the famous comics of that time, and champak comics were the best to pass time. Summer means reading comics, and lots of lots of them and it used to quench our thirst for reading fiction.
Walking down the memory lane, as I sit in an air-conditioned room away from the sweltering heat, my heart longs to return back to that time when the world was a simpler place and summers were joy. Why not plan a summer vacation today?
