Routes for Spiti valley from Delhi
As previously stated, there are two unique approaches to Spiti. The Shimla route is the first, while the Manali route is the second.
Shimla Route
Spiti Valley is 731 kilometers from Delhi and takes at least 22-24 hours to travel. One must first go to Shimla by bus or automobile, and then visit Narkanda from there. As you go farther into the Shimla area, entire mountain slopes covered in fruit orchards are readily visible, and this continues for quite some distance.
The transformation from Shimla to Kinnaur begins gradually, with fruit orchards giving way to massive Himalayan rock cliffs. Kinnaur is a stony and arid region. As you progress upward, you will note a shift in the religious rituals of individuals at various altitudes. The journey comes to an end for the day in Reckong Peo, the district headquarters of Kinnaur. From here, one may see the beautiful Kinnaur Kailash range. The next day, you must begin anew here for Kaza.
It's a good idea to leave for Kaza early in the morning, as it's just 200 kilometers away. By early afternoon, you should have arrived at Sumdo, the district end boundary of Kinnaur and the beginning boundary of Spiti. Continue your journey towards Kaza. and you should arrive at Kaza by early evening.
Manali Route
When traveling through Manali, the distance from Delhi to Kaza is 734 kilometers. This is the quicker of the two routes and will save you a significant amount of time. However, the height rise on this route is more than the one through Shimla. Due to significant snowfall induced by western disturbances that arrive from the Himalayas around this time, this road is closed by mid-October.
Because of the neighboring mountain passes, the route becomes impassable and stays closed for the next 6 months. The route leads from Manali to Rohtang Pass, then down into the Lahaul valley, following the Chandra River and turning right at Gramphoo. The road splits at Gramphoo, with one heading towards Ladakh and the other towards Spiti.
Modes of travel to Spiti valley
If you are wondering how to go to Spiti from Delhi, you may choose between two forms of transportation. You have the choice of traveling by rail or by airplane. Of course other than cars by road.
By train
If you opt to go to Spiti via Shimla, you will need to take two connecting trains: one from New Delhi Railway Station to Kalka and one from Kalka to Shimla. The best train on this line is the Shatabdi Express. It will take you directly from Delhi to Kalka. This train takes only approximately 4 hours to get from Delhi to Kalka. Once at Kalka, you can take one of three trains: the Shivalik Express (a luxury train), the Himalayan Queen, or the Kalka Shimla Passenger Special. The journey from Kalka to Shimla will take around 4.5 hours.
And if you opt to go to Spiti via Manali, Manali is not connected by train, therefore going by train is not an option. There isn't even another train station in the vicinity.
By Flight
If you want to go to Spiti through Shimla, you can take a flight from New Delhi to Shimla. Check the schedule ahead of time because Shimla airport is new and only recently began running flights.
If you want to go to Spiti through Manali, you may take a flight from New Delhi to Bhuntur Airport in Himachal's Kullu region (nearest airport to Manali).
