Indian Railways Takes Proactive Measures with Fire Safety Campaign Amidst Recent Train Fire Incidents

In a bid to ensure passenger safety and prevent untoward fire-related incidents during the ongoing festive season, Indian Railways has announced a comprehensive Fire Safety Campaign. This strategic move comes in the wake of several unfortunate incidents involving train fires, highlighting the need for proactive measures and robust safety protocols. The Railway Board has taken swift action by directing all zonal railways to initiate this campaign immediately.

Ensuring Fire Safety in the Heart of the Railway Network

The Railway Board, under the leadership of Mr Kashyap Rathod, Chairman of the Railway Board, has issued a directive to all zonal railways, urging them to kickstart the Fire Safety Campaign, marking a critical step in enhancing the safety of passengers and railway assets. With a firm commitment to safeguarding the interests of the millions of passengers who rely on the Indian Railways network, this initiative is poised to bring about significant changes in fire prevention and safety.

Key Recommendations to Prevent Fire Incidents

In a detailed letter addressed to the General Managers (GMs) of various zonal railways, the Railway Board has outlined a three-fold strategy to effectively prevent fire incidents on trains. These essential recommendations are as follows:

Need To Plan a Trip? Just Fill Details

Strict Vigilance on Inflammable Materials: The Railway Board has emphasized the need to monitor and prohibit the transportation of fireworks and other inflammable materials through railway parcel vans. This measure is expected to mitigate the risks associated with the unchecked transportation of hazardous items.

Regular Inspection of Dustbins: In an effort to identify and remove potential fire hazards, a comprehensive drive will be conducted to inspect all dustbins aboard the trains. This step aims to prevent the accidental ignition of inflammable materials like cigarettes and wrappers.

Ensuring Proper Functioning of Fire Detection and Suppression Systems: Regular checks of fire detection and suppression systems installed in coaches will be carried out. This initiative ensures that these crucial systems are in proper working condition, reducing response time in the event of a fire emergency.

Recent Fire Incidents Prompt Swift Action

The urgency of the Fire Safety Campaign is highlighted by a series of fire incidents that have occurred in recent months. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of passengers and railway assets.

One such incident occurred on October 25, when two coaches of the Patalkot Express caught fire in Agra district, Uttar Pradesh, leaving at least nine passengers injured. The Patalkot Express was en route from Firozpur Cantonment in Punjab to Seoni in Madhya Pradesh when the fire broke out in the third and fourth coaches from the engine, around 15:45 hrs. The express train serves as a vital transportation link between Firozpur Cantonment and Seoni.

In August, another fire incident took place when two air-conditioned coaches of the stationary Udyan Express ignited at the Bengaluru City Railway Station. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as no passengers were present inside the train when the fire broke out.

Legal Consequences of Carrying Inflammable Materials

Indian Railways has strictly prohibited the transportation of inflammable articles, explosives, and firecrackers on trains due to the severe safety risks they pose. Violation of this prohibition is a punishable offence under Sections 67, 154, 164, and 165 of The Railways Act 1989. Those found guilty can face penalties, including imprisonment of up to three years, fines of up to Rs 1000, or both. Moreover, offenders will be held accountable for any loss, injury, or damage resulting from their actions.

A Heartfelt Thanks from Mr Kashyap Rathod

As the Chairman of the Railway Board, Mr Kashyap Rathod expresses his sincere gratitude to all passengers and stakeholders for their continued support and cooperation in ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone who relies on the Indian Railways. Together, we can build a safer and more secure railway network.
